Barrel Challenge
Barrel Challenge is British Equestrian Vaulting's introductory schools game for boys and girls.
Based on the first 2 steps of training to vault on real horses, this is already in existence in vaulting clubs as a stand alone activity. Our local groups train weekly on vaulting barrels and hold regular barrel competitions within groups or with other local clubs and we look forward to welcoming young people who enjoy our school games Barrel Challenge into our local clubs.
It is exciting, innovative, creative and challenging, and is a sport that caters for and appeals to children of all ages, fitness and ability.
You can use equipment you have in schools already (a wooden vaulting horse or pommel and safety mats), and sessions can take place indoors or out to suit. This fun game is designed to make easy delivery for teachers and young leaders, with little or no previous knowledge of equestrian vaulting necessary.
Barrel Challenge is safe and exciting, inclusive, promotes team work, coordination, improves balance and core stability while allowing vaulters to express themselves to music. It works well for all young people, ranging from those who are looking to do something a bit different in school to those with a gymnastics or dance background. There is a strong leadership element in the programme with plans to design resources for those with a particular interest to become Vaulting Activators.
The Barrel Challenge Website is being developed to provide all you need to create a fun, weekly activity in school time or as an after school club. Our resources will include, help and advice, rules, score sheets, a full Barrel Challenge Award Scheme, lots of photos and video links for young people to get ideas and inspiration, club contacts, and a special area for Vaulting Activators, plus social networking links with opportunities to post pictures and video footage.
